The Starry Night Collective is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to deliver arts programs to students who have been excluded from mainstream education because they exhibit emotional or behavioral disorders (E/BD). These students are typically segregated into restrictive educational settings that severely limit their opportunities for art experiences—experiences that are perhaps the most important learning modality for students with E/BD.
The 17,000 students in E/BD programs across Minnesota receive few, if any, opportunities to experience the arts in school. Although these students would benefit from art-infused education programs in more and different ways than do most mainstream learners, students with E/BD in Minnesota generally are not offered even the basic art or music classes that most traditional students enjoy. Our aim is to give these children the same opportunities and help them learn in ways that will benefit them throughout their education and lives. Our goal is to help them shine.
